Questions to
Serge Cajfinger

What prompted you to call on the artist Julien Colombier to design a print?

I was looking for a strong print that resembled no other, but in the graphic spirit of PAULE KA. Once I discovered Julien’s work, I thought we could collaborate on an exclusive design. A few months later, the project had been carried out.

Once finalized, did you know which pieces you would design using this print?

I knew I wanted very minimalist but voluminous pieces. After several attempts, we created the perfect silhouette, full of life: a coat, a skirt, and a shirt-top.

You collect art. Do the pieces you collect often inspire PAULE KA designs?

Of course. My environment and the pieces around me are an endless source of inspiration. Whether it is the sensual geometry of a Mategot rug, the color of a Zimmermann painting, the sensual, abstract form of Cocteau’s eye… It renders my PAULE KA designs extremely personal.

Do you plan to collaborate with other artists for future collections?

I would very much like to. I have a few ideas, but you’ll just have to wait and see.

Questions to
Julien Colombier

What was the inspiration behind your print for PAULE KA?

I wanted something very dynamic. Contrary to a lot of my designs, which have more of a contemplative feel to them, a little floating, dreaming. In fact, I wanted for these flowers to be bursting with life, for them to portray a sense of movement.
They are inspired by a species of chrysanthemum called “shamrock.” I say “inspired” because I draw more from memory than a model. I have never been one for botanical realism – that is not really my form of art.

What kind of experience did you want to communicate to the PAULE KA woman with your print?

With respect to the rest of the collection and the PAULE KA spirit in general, which often plays in very distinguished ways on a few unified tones bouncing off one another, and which I call “flashy sobriety,” with this design, we took the opposite route…A print that is whole, sensual, dynamic and totally unapologetic!
And, with these shades of pink, one could believe it came straight from the studio.

Your taste for contrast resonates perfectly with the PAULE KA spirit. What other common points do you see between your two styles?
Our two ways of working are rather different, but I find in both the desire to make something very modern with a classic approach…and with elegance, if possible.

To what artistic movement do you feel most drawn?

I belong to no precise movement, but am inspired by several. I grew up with graffiti and the first major wave of urban culture. At the same time, I was also very marked by Matisse and Fauvism, ancient Japanese art, but also Art Deco and Art Nouveau… My influences are mixed.
